The NAT-TEST provides a general evaluation of a candidate’s Japanese language proficiency. It is administered by Senmon Kyouiku Publishing Co., which is located in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Globally, NAT is the second-most popular Japanese language test, offered in over 50 cities across 16 Asian countries. The exam is usually held six times per year and has five levels of difficulty (Q1 to Q5), with Q5 being the easiest and Q1 the hardest. The test evaluates three main skills: vocabulary and grammar, reading, and listening comprehension.

Taking the NAT-TEST offers several benefits. The scores can help applicants apply for student visas or meet admission requirements in Japan, including schools, vocational institutions, language schools, colleges, and universities. All candidates receive a score report, and those who pass are awarded a Certificate of Proficiency. The official score report can also be used for student visa applications or as part of admission requirements in Japanese language institutions. Additionally, it may be valuable for job applications in Japan.

The passing criteria for the NAT-TEST are similar to the JLPT. Candidates must pass the overall examination as well as each individual section, achieving more than 25% in each. If a candidate meets both the sectional and overall score requirements, they are considered to have successfully passed the exam.
